Networking Effectively

Networking can seem like a daunting prospect. It conjures up images of suited individuals making small talk over drinks and nibbles.

For those whose hearts race at the thought of entering a room of total strangers, we would probably prefer to cancel or avoid at all costs.

But is this what networking is really about? Well, on occasions yes, drinks evenings still exist, but there are other ways you can network too.

Here are some tips to help try and remove as much of the pain from these situations as possible.

So why network in the first place?

  • It’s a good way of keeping up to date with businesses that interest you.
  • You can connect with relevant people in businesses that you might want to work for.
  • It helps you begin building support networks that you can call on for help when you need it, and offer your support to them too.
  • You might find an opportunity to take advantage of some “peer-to-peer” learning from someone you meet.
  • It’s a great chance to expand your horizons. You might start talking about a subject you’ve never considered before, and that could lead to other opportunities.
  • People you network with could refer you to other people they know, who need your skills or experience for projects.
